Expenses of a Horse
21 July 2010
You’ve been told that it is expensive to purchase a horse, and even more expensive to take care of it. But exactly how expensive is expensive? Here’s a list of the ballpark figures of what you need to prepare when you buy a horse.
1. To buy a horse, it would cost an average of $3,000.
2. Now to maintain it, you would need a stable which costs $250 to $1,000 per month. That’s $3,000 to $12,000 per year. If you keep this for 20 years, that would be $60,000 to $240,000.
3. You need to buy hay, saddle, bedding, tack and other things. A bedding and hay is $100 or more every month. The stable needs salt, minerals, water and electricity which is $40 per month.
4. Veterinarian fee is $200 to $300 per year. When your horse gets sick, the medical cost would be roughly $200 to $8000 for basic treatment up to surgery.
5. Horse’s hooves trimming - $30 every 2 months. Shoes $30. Farrier costs would be $360 per year.
6. Basic Insurance, $40.
7. Equipment budget is at least $2000.
8. Miscellaneous fees about $200 to $300 per year.
With all these fees presented to you, will you still purchase a horse? It’s your call.
